Villages are no longer copied out of a catalog: they are built, room by room, on the ground that receives them.

The vision

Building rather than copying

A village in the game is an assembly of buildings taken from a closed catalog. They are all recognized at a glance, and the tenth village looks like the first. Village does not add buildings to that catalog: it reads what it holds, draws a vocabulary from it, and builds from there.

What makes a Minecraft village stays in place. The location, the type the biome dictates, the well, the bell, the professions, the loot, the raids: none of that changes. What changes is what is found on arrival.

And since the construction uses only the game's own blocks, it outlives the module. Removing it leaves the villages standing, livable, entirely vanilla; only the next ones stop being built. On the other hand, an already generated village is never taken over: the module builds the ones discovered afterwards.

Element, room, building

Three scales are enough to describe everything that gets built. The element is what goes inside, the furniture, the decoration, the work station. The room is a volume crossed without passing an interior door, with its function and its light. The building is a set of rooms, which is to say a plan seen from above.

That split moves the subject. A profession no longer belongs to a building but to a room, which lets the same lumberjack occupy a standalone workshop, a cabin, or a large house with one room set aside. Three outcomes, none of the three written down.

But the reading direction matters even more than the split. A building does not start from a box carved up afterwards, which only ever yields volumes with no reason to exist. It starts from what it must shelter: the program gives the areas, the areas give the rooms, the rooms give the plan and its circulation, and the shell and the roof come last, derived from the footprint obtained. This is design, not an assembly of pieces already seen.

No room is a fixed plan

A room is not a model set back down unchanged, it is an adjustable base from which the generator draws a hundred variants that stay recognizable. What makes its identity does not move: its function, the furniture that defines it, its proportions, the hearth or the mezzanine that gives it character.

The rest varies, but never by plain scaling, which would cut a table in half and leave a window straddling a corner. Every part belongs to a family: what stretches, the walls and the floor; what repeats, the windows and the posts; what stays unique, the door, the hearth, the workbench. An enlarged room lengthens its walls and multiplies its windows without ever gaining a second door.

The palette, for its part, does not belong to the room: it comes from the place. The same room comes out in taiga wood or in desert sandstone without being redrawn.

What no building says

The game's catalog is almost entirely made of single-room buildings. So it supplies a vocabulary but no example of assembly: nothing in it shows how two rooms connect, and the corridor does not exist there.

That missing part is written once and for all, as rules that speak of no material, no biome and no profession, only of livability. Every room is reachable from the entrance. Every lived-in room is lit. A window opens onto the outside, not onto the neighboring wall. An upper floor demands its stair. The roof closes and overhangs. A bedroom does not open onto the street. What overhangs rests on something.

Those rules bring out what no example ever showed. The corridor is born of the demand for privacy: as soon as there are two private rooms and a single entrance, the buffer space becomes mandatory. And the duty to stand up produces posts and beams, which is to say timber framing, which is to say style, without any style having been drawn.

A bounded procedural

A generator left free always ends up producing an aberration: a room with no use, an impossible roof, a corridor leading nowhere. Nothing is left free. Every parameter is calibrated and bounded on what has been measured then validated: a room never falls below the area that keeps it usable, a roof never exceeds the pitch that holds it, a span never stretches beyond what it can carry. The draw happens inside the range, never outside it.

Bounds prevent, rules refuse. A building with an unreachable room, a walled-up door or a blind window does not come out as is: it is set aside, and drawn again. One building fewer beats an aberration that someone eventually finds around the corner of a street.

The ground has the last word

Nothing is dropped onto ground flattened by decree. The relief decides what it can carry: a wide open plain can host a town, a narrow valley a hamlet, a cluttered ridge a cabin and nothing more. The ground sets a ceiling, the draw picks below it. So a large plain does not always yield a town, but no ravine ever will.

The ground is then cut into plots, and the plot gives the orders. Its area and its slope set a budget, the budget sets a number of rooms, the rooms set the plan, the plan sets the shell and the roof. A building is never dropped and then patched up: it is built for the exact spot where it stands, terraced, backed into the slope, stretched if the plot is narrow.

The relief does not only set the size: it dictates a way of settling in. A drop is crossed by a street stair, a fault by a bridge, a short step by a ladder, and a rock face that refuses any footing gets dug into rather than skirted, as cave rooms. None of those answers is an ornament added afterwards, each is called for by what the ground demands at that exact spot. That is what makes a village embed itself instead of sitting on top of the land.

From the cabin to the town

No size is a case foreseen. Everything that makes a village is a threshold: the well appears when there are enough people to serve, the street when serving them becomes a problem, the square when several streets meet, the bell when there is a community. The lone cabin is simply what remains when every threshold sits below its minimum.

A single quantity produces both extremes: density. Low, it spreads the buildings apart, removes any reason for streets and lets the fields touch the houses. High, it tightens the plots, forces party walls, makes streets appear out of necessity then ranks them, and pushes the fields outside for lack of room. Nobody drew the hamlet, nobody drew the town.

A second notion places what needs placing. The center is what is reached most easily, and therefore the most contested: public buildings take it, while the forge, the stable and the pens are pushed to the edge. The great square in the middle and the farms on the outskirts are not instructions, they are what follows.

An inhabited village

Population is not a number that gets rolled, it is a consequence of what was built. The bed makes the resident, the work station makes the profession. A town of two hundred beds holds two hundred residents because it has two hundred beds, and most of them practice no trade, for want of a workbench each.

The villager stays the game's own, with its trades, its dealings and its habits: nothing is replaced by another civilization. Golems appear by the game's own rule, but stand where a town is guarded, at its gates and its crossings, instead of wandering at random.

A whole town exceeds what a server can carry in entities. Far from any eye, a resident is therefore only a line: their bed, their trade, their state. They take their place back on approach, never reborn, and the town keeps on existing between visits instead of freezing.

Open to mods, open to the workshop

A mod that adds village buildings is no competitor: it widens the vocabulary. Its rooms, its palettes and its professions go through the same path as the game's own, without a single line written for it. The more of them are installed, the more words the villages have at hand.

The same door opens to the player. A workshop allows composing an element, a room, a building, tuning their procedural parameters, then handing them to the vocabulary. What is created there comes back out in the world's villages, declined into as many variants as the generator draws, and a dozen well-tuned rooms are enough to give a whole region its face.
